The results of studies on attitudes toward disabilities are mixed, and findings thus far have been confined to the cognitive and emotional aspects. Since attitude towards disabilities is an essential factor of rehabilitation and social integration for people with disabilities, this study aimed to address the need for deeper investigation. Participants included 420 5th and 6th grade students from elementary schools in South Korea. The effects of knowledge-base, self-esteem, and empathy on attitudes toward disabilities were analyzed using multiple regression analyses controlled by social desirability. Findings showed that emotional empathy, exclusively had a significant impact on attitude towards disability. These results suggest that it would be beneficial to focus elementary school inclusion education programs on emotional factors rather than cognitive. A follow-up study is recommended to examine how these same psychological characteristics vary among age groups.
